- This indicator measures the number of new HIV infections per 1,000 uninfected population, by sex, age and risk group exposure category as defined as the number of newly confirmed HIV infections per 1000 person-years among the uninfected population.

- Classification used
- HIV is the virus that weakens the immune system, ultimately leading to AIDS. HIV incidence (sometimes referred to as cumulative incidence) is the number of new cases arising in a given period in a specified population. UNAIDS normally refers to the number of adults aged 15-49 years or children (aged 0–14 years) who have become infected during the past year.

- Disaggregation is by general population, risk group exposure category, age groups (0-14, 15-24, 15-49, 50+ years), sex (male, female, both).
- Key statistical concepts
